Passage Narration

  1. At first, you have to read the whole passage to identify the speaker and the audience.

  2. If reporting verb is placed in the middle or at the last of the sentence.

3. Speaker making more than one statement: 

  1. In case of Assertive sentences: 

also said/again said, added/further added, etc. are used.

ii. Interrogative sentence:    also asked/again asked/ further asked.

iii. Imperative sentence:       and ordered to/ and requested.

iv. Optative sentence-:        and wished/and prayed that.

v. Exclamatory sentence:     and exclaimed with happiness/ joy that/in

                                     grief that.

“I will help you to solve this problem. I am responsible for it.” The boy said. “Why did you do it? Do you have time for it? You are leaving Dhaka this evening.” I said. (Direct)

The boy told me that he would solve this problem. He added that he was responsible for it. I asked him the reason for doing it. I also asked if he had time for it. I added that he was leaving Dhaka that evening. (Indirect)

Subject+ replied in the affirmative or Subject+ Auxilliary Verb

Subject+ replied in the affirmative and said that.

I said to him, “Have you done the math?”. “Yes. I have also done another one.” He said. (Direct)

Subject+ replied in the negative or Subject+ Auxilliary Verb+ not.

I said to him, “Have you done the math?”. “No. I will do it later.” He said. (Direct)

I asked him if he had done the math. He replied in the negative. Or, he said that he

had not. And he said that he would do it later. (Indirect)


6. “Sir” :- with respect/respectfully/ politely instead of “Sir”.
          The student said to the teacher,” Sir, will you teach me the math?” (Direct)
The student asked the teacher respectfully if he would teach him the math. /
The student respectfully asked the teacher if he would teach him the math. (Indirect)

7. someone addressed : addressing ‘as’.

“Are you okay, Tonni?” said Piu. (Direct)

Addressing as Tonni, Piu asked if she was okay. (Indirect)

8.      If outside the inverted comma reporting speech has “ask”:-

it will be used after the subject in the indirect speech.

“Are you coming?” asked Rina looking at me. “You may join me when I ” Rina said. (Direct)
Looking at me, Rina asked If I was going. She suggested me to join her when she would go. (Indirect)

9. a note of interrogation (?) after an assertive sentence:-

 “being surprised” before the reporting verb.

He said to me, “You did it?” (Direct)

Being surprised he asked me if I had done it. (Indirect)

10. “Thank” :- subject+ thanked+ reported verb’s object.

Karim said to me, “Thank you.” (Direct)

Karim thanked me. (Indirect)

11. “Good bye” : - subject+ bade+ reported verb’s object+ good bye.

She said Lira, “Goodbye.” (Direct)

She bade Lira goodbye. (Indirect)

12. good night/good morning/ good evening: -

 subject+ wished+ reported verb’s object+ good night/good morning/ good evening .

He said to her, “Good evening.” (Direct)

He wished her good evening. (Indirect)

13. Sometimes reported speech doesn’t have a complete sentence:-

in those cases, you have to guess the full meaning.

“Thirty taka” The salesman said to me. (Direct)

The salesman told me it had been thirty taka (Indirect)

14. speaker and the listener not mentioned :-

mention the speaker and the listener while transforming it into indirect speech.

“What are you doing now?” “I am writing an article.” (Direct)

The speaker asked the listener what he was doing then. The listener replied that s/he was writing an article. (Indirect)

15. If reported speech has asked/ cried/replied/muttered :-

 the reporting verb in the indirect speech will be unchanged.

Help me.” He cried. (Direct)

He cried to help him. (Indirect)


1.   He said, “I can chop some wood today.” I said, “But I have a boy coming from the 
     orphanage.” “I’m the boy,” “You? But you’re small.” “Size don’t matter chopping
      wood,” he said.
Answer : He told me that he could chop some wood that day. But I told him that I had a boy coming from the orphanage. He told me that he was the boy. I wondered and asked if it was he. I also added that he was small. He told me that size did not matter chopping wood.

 2. “I’ll pay for it,” he said. “I broke it, I brought the exe down careless.” “But no one hits accurately every time, Jerry. Moreover, the fault was in the wood of the handle. I’ll see the man who I have bought it from,” I told him.

Answer: Jerry said that he would pay for it and added that he had broken it, he had brought the exe down careless. Expressing dissatisfaction I told Jerry that no one hit accurately every time. Moreover, the fault had been in the wood of the handle. I told him that I would see the man who I had bought it from.

3. The stranger said to the boy, “Can you tell me the way to the nearest hotel?” “Yes, Sir, I can. Do you want a residential one in which you can spend the night?” said the boy. “I don’t want to stay there but I only want a meal.” replied the man. “Paradis Garden will be better for you.” said the boy.
Answer:The stranger asked the boy if he could tell him the way to the nearest hotel and the boy replied that he could tell the way and added a question whether he wanted a residential one in which he could spend the night. The man said that he don't wanted to stay there but he only wanted a meal so, the boy then replied that the hotel named Paradis Garden would be better for him.

 4. Rifat said to Munir, “You didn’t attend my birthday party.” “Extremely sorry, friend.” Munir replied, “I had to go to my uncle’s house in Dhaka. How was the program?” “Let me show you the photographs” said Rifat.

Answer: Rifat told Munir that he hadn’t attended his birthday party. Munir apologized for that and added that he had to go to his uncle’s house in Dhaka and asked how the program had been. He requested that he might show him the photographs.

5. The teacher said to Kamal, “Why are you talking in the class? You should behave  yourself.” Kamal replied, “Sir, I am sorry. I am asking Rahim to lend me his pen. My pen has run out.” The teacher said, “Be attentive and listen to my lecture.

Answer: The teacher asked Kamal why he was talking in the class and added that he should behave himself. He respectfully apologized and said that he was asking Rahim to lend him (K) his (R) pen and added that his (K) pen had run out. The teacher told to be attentive and listen to his (T) lecture.









Right form of verbs

 Right form of verbs

1.   চিরসত্য, অভ্যাস বুঝালে কিংবা always, sometimes, often, generally, daily, everyday, occasionally. Usually, normally ইত্যাদি থাকলে present Indefinite Tense হয়।

He always disturbs the class. When do you take your meal normally? A good student prepares his lesson regularly.

2.   বাক্যে সাহায্যকারী verb না থাকলে Negative/Interrogative করতে Tense/subject অনুসারে do/does/did ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

He (come)home yesterday? = Did he come home yesterday?

3.   এখন চলছে বুঝালে Present Continuous হয়। এ ক্ষেত্রে now/at this moment ইত্যদি উল্লেখ থাকতে পারে।

The baby (sleep)now. = The baby is sleeping now. They (watch) Tv at this moment.

4.   Has/have/had থাকলে past participle হয়।

He has (do) the work. = He has done the work.

5.   Just, just now, already, yet, ever, lately, recently থাকলে  present perfect tense হয়।

He (go)out just now. = He has gone out just now.

6.   গত হয়ে গেছে এমন সময়ের উল্লেখ থাকলে (যেমন yesterday, ago, any past time)past Indefinite হয়।

He (leave) home last night. I (see) him long ago. He built the house in 1980.

7.   No sooner had --- than, scarcely had --- when, hardly had --- before থাকেলে ১ম verb past participle ও ২য় verb past form হয়।

No sooner had he (see)the police than he (run) away.

8.   Present + since + Past Indefinite

It (be) many years since I (come) to Dhaka.

9.   Past Indefinite + since + Past Perfect

Many days (pass) since they (meet).

10. Past Perfect + before + Past Indefinite

The patient (die) before the doctor (come).

11.  Past Indefinite + after + Past Perfect

Mina (leave) school after the rain (stop).

12. সাধারনত ২টি Verb থাকলে এবং উদ্দেশ্য বুঝালে ১টি verb এরে আগে to বসাতে হয়। উদ্দেশ্য না বুঝালে ing যোগ করতে হয়।

I went to market (buy) a pen. I saw him (go).

13. Had better, would rather, let, must, Need, dare ইত্যাদি verb এর পর present form হয়।

Since you are ill, you had better (go) home. I will not let you (enter) the class room.

14. Would that থাকলে could এবং present form হয়।

Would that I (go)to school again.

15. Mind, worth, can/could not help, with a view to, look forward to, get used to, having কিংবা preposition থাকলে verb এর সাথে ing যোগ করতে হয়।

I went to the library with a view to (read) there. I never thought of (go) there.

16. It is time, It is high time, wish, fancy ইত্যাদি থাকলে past form হয়।

I wish I (be) a king. It is high time you (give) up your bad habits.

17. As though, as if, wish থাকলে to be স্হানে were হয।

I wish I (be) a king. He talks as if he (be) a leader.

18. If + present + Future

If he works hard, he (shine) in life.

19. If + Past Indefinite + would/could/might-present form.

If he came, I (go).           সে যদি আসতো, আমি যেতাম।

20. If + past perfect + would/could/ might-have-past participle

If I had seen him, I (tell) him the matter.

21. Had + past participle + would/could/ might+have-past participle

Had I been a king, I (help) the poor.
